Houston, Jan. 18, 2017 – Winstead PC is providing legal counsel for the Houston Super Bowl LI Host Committee (Host Committee) marking the third Texas based Super Bowl Host Committee counseled by the firm.

In addition to working with the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee this year, Winstead provided the 2004 Houston and 2011 North Texas Host Committees with legal counsel in a variety of areas, including sponsorship, contractual, intellectual property, and corporate governance issues, and public finance matters relating to the planning, bidding, financing and securing of the games.

"The world’s focus will turn to our city and Super Bowl LI on Sunday, February 5, 2017, and Houstonians should feel a great sense of pride that the game is once again taking place here," said Sallie Sargent, President and CEO of the Host Committee. “The Winstead team, led by David Staas, has been invaluable to the Host Committee given their institutional knowledge of this event. Their unending commitment to our efforts has been outstanding.”

According to Winstead, Houston’s success in hosting of Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, and the continued collaboration among business and civic leaders to position Houston as a premier sports city, played a great role in landing Super Bowl LI. "It takes an immense amount of effort and cooperation to secure an event of this caliber, but Houston stepped up to the challenge. Our city’s residents, businesses and civic leaders deserve congratulations for making Houston a premier host city for this and other global sporting events.”

“The Winstead team has worked enthusiastically and collaboratively with the host cities, business communities and civic leaders to successfully bid for three Texas Super Bowls,” said Winstead Chairman and CEO David Dawson. “As a firm, it makes us proud of the work done by our attorneys.”

Bringing a global event to Houston provides a showcase of the diversity and can-do spirit of the region,” notes Winstead shareholder David Staas. “We are proud to be a part of making the event a success for our community.”

Winstead's Sports Business & Public Venues Industry Group has served as counsel to various local organizing committees for events including: NBA All-Star games, NCAA Men’s Final Four and other major bowl games. The group also serves as lead counsel to professional sports teams, international venue management companies, concessionaires, design professionals and contractors, and governmental authorities responsible for financing, developing, designing, constructing, and operating of sports venues in the U.S. and around the world.
