Winstead PC is pleased to announce that Shareholder Denis Braham will be one of the two recipients of the David H. White Memorial Award on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. The award will be presented by the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston at the Center’s annual meeting, which is being held at the Harris J. Weingarten Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Boniuk Family Tennis Center.

The David H. White Memorial Award is named after the former publisher of the Jewish Herald-Voice.  According to the Center, the criteria for selection of honorees is the following: “Commitment to the ideals of Jewish life; Service reflecting the highest integrity, love for one’s fellow man and dedication to the task; and Active involvement within the Jewish community of Houston.”

Braham has been an active volunteer for the Jewish community for many years.  A current member of the advisory board of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Braham is also an advisor to the Ramon Foundation, a leading nongovernmental organization in Israel dedicated to promoting space and aviation.  Additionally, Braham has served as chair of the board of trustees for the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and he has also served a term on the board of trustees for the Jewish Federations of North America.

Previously, Braham was chairman of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (which is now called The National Coalition Supporting Eurasian Jewry). During his time as chairman, Braham worked with both the Clinton administration and the Soviet government in order to provide Jewish people from the Soviet Union the ability to freely practice their religion and also emigrate to other countries. Through his work with the organization, Braham helped with efforts that ultimately resulted in over one million Jewish people from the Soviet Union emigrating to both Israel and other Jewish communities throughout the globe. He also helped organize Freedom Sunday for Soviet Jews, a national march that took place in Washington, D.C. in 1987.

In an article by the Jewish Herald-Voice highlighting the upcoming award, Braham spoke about being an honoree. “I’m honored and very humbled that the community would recognize my contributions,” he said. “To stand alongside other leaders in our communities who’ve gotten the award makes me proud.”
